Tonight, (Wednesday) I'm going with a friend down to Oakland to see a performance by McCoy Tyner at a club called, "Yoshi's". As an added atraction, he will be accompanied by Pharoh Saunders and Ravi Coltrane, who is the son of the legendary John Coltrane, a former Tyner musical conspirator. So I'll probably keep it to a minimum here. I'm tempted to discuss Tuesday's primary results, but that wouldn't be conducive to a minimalist view. I had something I was thinking about earlier, but i'd like to give it the attention it deserves. However....Since I often see the thoughts I put here discused seriously in later columns and news shows, I should at least get it on record. (ahem)
Electability seems to be the biggest concern for Democratic voters this year. And indeed, it should be. Bush and the evildoers must be vanquished. But is electability the biggest issue with the candidates? Truth be told, it's their personal electability they're most concerned with. While I've previously mentioned how multi-candidates have a positive effect by providing a tougher moving target for Republicans to attack, it can also be negative, since the infighting can eventually be used against the eventual candidate.
When Dean was large and in charge, Bush henchmen started their shmear campaign on him a little early.... a decision they must now regret. The smart move may have been for them to hold their fire until they saw the whites of Deans eyes as the official Democratic candidate. Now it looks as if they could see Kerry on the other side of the debating podium and Bush's popularity has dipped below 50% for the first time. These bozos can't plan a political campaign any better than they planned the war. However, they campaign with the intensity of a war.... anything goes in the name of victory.
So eventually....and sooner rather than later....the Democrats have to present a solid coalition. They can't keep providing amunition for the opposition by tearing at each other's hindquarters. If electability is as much an issue for them as it appears to be for the potential voters, the smartest way to go would be to present a coalition, each candidate bringing his constituency into the fold. Among the Demo candidates, one would find the members of an all-star cabinet that would permit each one to provide an area of expertise. May I suggest:
Pres. Kerry
V.Pres. Edwards
Sec.of State Clark
Dept.of HEW (or whatever has replaced it) Dean
Sec of Tres. Kocinich
EPA Chief Gephardt
This leaves some loose ends of course. Al Sharpton (despite providing the best and most direct answers in the S.Carolina debate) may not find a place in this set-up. A special Department of Whiney Nebishes would have to be established for Lieberman.
While supporters of everyone but Kerry may disagree with some or all of my choices, I think there's some method to my madness which I'll briefly explain. I invite any observers of this excersize to join in with their selections and reasons.
In this "time of war', a military man with proven battle valor is a good and comforting choice to the vast "centrist" vote that will decide the next President. Edwards will gain the visability and experience needed for a future Presidential contender. Gen. Clark seems like a natural fit to replace Gen. Powell. Doctor Howard Dean can help implement his healthcare plan and Kucinich can revoke NAFTA and the Free Trade Agreement. Admittedly, I have no discernable reason for installing Gephardt as the EPA chief. But how the hell did Christy Whitman get selected for that post? She was the Governor of filthy, stinking, smelly, New Jersey, for cryin' out loud!
I bid you good night ~Brahma*
