Happy St. Stupid's Day!
To my knowledge, the Church of the Subgenius has but one mandatory holiday...April 1st, or as they call it...St. Stupid's Day! Every year, a group of free-wheelin', clownish costume wearing Subgeni and friends parade down a major street in San Francisco to spread joy and mirth to the worker bees of society. This behavior, which captures the spirit of S.F so well, has happened every April 1st for over 20 years. It's become such a regular thing that the press coverage it used to warrant is no longer supplied in the quantity it was. But I'll scan the local periodicals for a mention and hopefully a photo.
A few years ago, many of the same folks came out en masse to protest the discontinuing of the comic strip, "Zippy The Pinhead" by showing up in Zippy costumes outside of the S.F. Chronicle building. There were about 300 people dressed as pinhead clowns, carrying signs, shouting, "Bring Back Zippy, Bring back Zippy"...until eventually an editor appeared on the front steps to announce that the paper had aquiesed...Zippy would NOT be canceled! The announcement stunned the crowd, who didn't know how to react. At that point, someone in the crowd started shouting, "Can-cel Zippy, Can-cel Zippy"...and in true Zippy fashion, the chant was immediately taken up by the rest of the crowd of pinheads! It was covered in the paper...I should look through their archives for it.
Anyway...remember to have a happy St. Stupid's Day on Tuesday!
