Thoughts from New York

Last week a question was raised on a communal website I share with some friends who I've known most of my life, living mainly in the N.Y. area. How will we react to this day, Sept. 11 2002. I didn't respond, because I didn't have an answer. But today I'd like to post a message from someone who works in New York and witnessed the atrocity

911 Observation

Today is a very difficult day -- you can see the pain and stress on every virtually face in the street. I am about to take a walk because I can't even think about work. About 10% of my employees showed up( I'm glad that people took me seriously that today would not be a normal day and that showing up or not was a personal option) -- those that are here and I are sort of just hanging out in my office -- like we did last year.
Passing the UN and other landmarks and seeing the national guard and the helicopters and fighter plans stirs up rather strong and complex emotions.

I listen to the names being read , one by one, in their entirety and seeing the face , in a photo,of one of my employees family members who perished ,once again underscores the immensity of this tragedy.

I am now glad that this wasn't made an holiday with offices officially closing. People do have to make their own choices and if they need to be somewhere else and their office/place of work is open for normal businessthey have to excercise the courage to make their own decisions -- even if they have a boss that may be pissed off or they lose a days pay. We live in a world where we look to others to tell us how to feel, think and what we should do/how to behave. That is not excercising our freedom
